Robert Wiens discusses his current exhibition « Hyphen, Hyphae » in relation to the environmental concerns that have been his major occupation since his « White Pine » series in 1997. His favoured arboreal subject began as a demonstration of his ongoing commitment to environmentalism in response to the threat of clear-cutting in the Temagami region. Over time the subject of his work expanded to include other native tree species, and with this exhibition, a continued exploration of mushrooms sprouting from forest floors.

In conjunction with « Elemental », a solo exhibition by Shellie Zhang, Patel Brown is pleased to invite the public to an exhibition tour with the artist and a special guest.

In a public event, artist Alyssa Alikpala and Joys director Danica Pinteric will discuss the themes of the exhibition and residency.

Join Suzanne Nacha in conversation with Canadian artist, Matthew Carver. Matthew Carver is a painter who often questions in the studio if something pleasing and beautiful can shift, nudge, and hint at something darker and possibly foreboding. Together, Nacha and Carver will discuss Nacha’s newest body of work ‘Planets of the Universe’ to delve into the intricacies of her art practice, and how her personal history and side hustle as a geological scientist informs her painting and sculpture.

Join us on September 24, 2023 at 2pm, for an artist talk and a guided exhibition tour. Expanding from Mazinani’s previous research on the relationship of photography to perception, media distribution, and consumption, « An Impossible Perspective » is an investigation into artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. In this work, Mazinani presents imagery of plants as both metaphor and conduit for an artistic speculation on the future of humanity’s relationship to creativity, truth, and labour.
